Moonroof vs. Sunroof: What’s the Difference?

2023 Mazda CX-30

Shopping around Hartford for a brand new or slightly used Mazda vehicle? If you’re comparing features between models, you’ve more than likely heard about the addition of moonroofs and sunroofs. Although they may sound like similar design features, there are numerous distinct differences. So, what exactly are the differences between a sunroof and a moonroof? Both are types of roof panels, however, there are several key distinctions:

  • Moonroofs are usually a clear or tinted glass panel that slides between the roof and the headliner, and can sometimes also be tilted open to let in fresh air. Moonroofs are sometimes but not always, larger than sunroofs.
  • Sunroofs, by contrast, are generally opaque panels made of metal or even canvas in some cases, that are installed in the roof of a car, truck, or SUV, which pop up, can be removed, or slide open to allow light and air into the cabin.

What is a Sunroof?

The biggest difference between sunroofs and moonroofs are that conventional sunroofs are opaque panels on the top of a car, truck, or SUV. These panels match the rest of the body color. They can typically be tilted open or sometimes even removed to let in some fresh air or light during your Watertown commute.

What is a Moonroof?

So, when comparing moonroofs vs. sunroofs, how does the former differentiate itself? After all, a moonroof is technically a variation of sunroof. However, moonroofs are made of glass, can’t be removed from your vehicle, and usually come with an interior sliding panel that you can shift open to access the moonroof itself. You’ll more than likely find that most modern vehicles feature a moonroof rather than a sunroof.
