MAZDA Hatchback Models Through the Years

It should come as no surprise that our pre-owned car inventory is where you should look to find a tried-and-true classic like the 2008 Mazda3 Grand Touring Hatchback. Even though that iconic hatch is far from the newest Mazda3, it’s nearly just as far from being the first-ever Mazda hatchback. For a fact-laden history of Mazda hatchbacks, read on or contact Modern Mazda.
MAZDA GLC
A three-door, 52-horsepower hatchback known as the Mazda GLC was the first Mazda vehicle of its kind to land on American shorelines in 1977. In 1978, a five-door version of the hatch hit the market. A 65-horsepower 1.4-liter engine debuted the following year, with rectangular headlights introduced in 1980.
Second-Generation MAZDA GLC
The second-generation Mazda GLC remained in production from 1981 through 1985. Whereas previous iterations of the hatch had rear-wheel drive, this hatchback had front-wheel drive. The vehicle’s 1.5-liter 68-horsepower engine was lighter than earlier powerplants, and it paired with a four- or five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic transmission.
MAZDA 323
Slightly larger than the Mazda GLC, this hatchback’s 1.6-liter engine produced 82 horsepower. For the first time, a Mazda hatchback had a fuel-injected engine, which was big news. The car’s top speed of 106 mph increased the lasting appeal of Mazda hatchbacks.
Second-Generation MAZDA 323
In 1990, the Mazda 323 kicked off its second generation, much to the delight of automotive enthusiasts. The three-door hatch continued to trot ahead with a growing legion of followers through 1994.
MAZDA3
With the Mazda Protégé only offered as a sedan for several years, the Mazda3 Hatchback debuted in 2004. Sold along its four-door sedan brethren, the five-door Mazda3 Hatchback was widely celebrated for its size and comfort. Its speed was noteworthy as well, with its 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 160 horsepower.
Several generations have passed since the Mazda3 Hatchback made its debut. That said, the 2025 Mazda3 Hatchback soars onward and upward as a modern interpretation of its venerable forebearers. With a maximum cargo capacity of 47.1 cubic feet and sought-after technology and safety features, the Mazda3 Hatchback is as versatile as it is popular.
